How to get on the metro
To use metro trains, you’ll need a Nol card. You can buy it at any metro station and top it up at any shop displaying the sign that says Nol Card. Then enter through a turnstile with your Nol card on hand. Look up which stop you need to get off at and which side of each train your doors will be on, so you don’t have to rush or think too much when disembarking! Enjoy!
How to choose your seat
There are a few things to keep in mind when selecting your seat on a train. The first thing is that trains become extremely crowded during rush hour, so it’s important to pick a spot where you can stand comfortably without impeding anyone else’s movement. The second factor to consider is getting a seat with access to power outlets and wifi signals; since many UAE residents work remotely, you’ll likely have enough empty seats near you if they do exist.
Where are all the important stops?
The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Airport stop is huge—not only will it be one of two inter-airport transfers, but it will also act as a local stop for residents of Aviation City. You can also see that a new branch has been added to reach both Palm Jumeirah and Palm Deira. The closest station to Downtown Dubai/Burj Khalifa is Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, but that’s a long walk from these landmarks.
Which lines connect where?
While it’s clear that there will be a lot of new stations in 2020, it’s not so obvious which lines connect where. At present, only 50% of riders are on a train at any given time. For example, trains heading to Rashidiya from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall may not pass by your apartment or office. It is also not clear whether you can transfer between two different lines at every station.

What are the different metro lines in Dubai?
The Emirates Integrated Rapid Transit, also known as EIRTD or simply Dubai Metro, is a rail-based transit system in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Red Line and Green Line were opened on 9 September 2009. On 10 November 2011, three more lines were added to increase public transport capacity. This was part of a plan to have 122 km of rail in operation by 2020. Since then two new lines opened in 2018 and one new line that will open soon in 2019.
What are some things I should keep in mind when using public transport in Dubai?
One of my favorite ways to get around in Dubai is by using public transport. I find it a great way to see the city and interact with locals and other travelers—not to mention, it’s often much cheaper than using Uber or taxi services. The only issue: figuring out which bus or train to take! To help you navigate mass transit in Dubai, here are some things to keep in mind.
